Think about having lights fixed to the wall or suspended lamps so you don't have to limit yourself to selecting a specific height for your bedside table. Personally, I like to find the perfect bedside tables to add interest and function as a prominent feature within the room. I will then choose lamps or lighting fixtures that work well with my side tables and the room in general. Tall nightstands produce a striking effect and really bring a simpler, understated bed to life. Some designs of tall, free standing floor lamps have integrated tables. The prominent feature is the lamp itself, but they also provide a functional, usually circular, table for your books, drinks and the like. Try matching two of these lamp table hybrids with a bed that has a high headboard, that extends beyond the top of the lampshade; this will produce a dramatic effect in your bedroom.
Should you be short on space in your bedroom consider buying a narrow bedside cabinet. Metal cabinets look sleek and are slim, taking up less space than a wooden nightstand. Complement with a tall, slim lamp to give the effect of height and vertical space. Pedestals are another great space-saving option and provide just enough room for a lamp, book or drink.
