Making a basement area family-friendly may be a challenge with some basements, but it can be done. When my stepson purchased his home, the cellar was disgusting. It was a dirty pit, dark and dismal with only an area carved out for a washer and dryer. He's lived there more than 20 years now, and over that time he worked at transforming the living space into something truly delightful. There's room for his daughter to have friends over, an extra bathroom, and well-equipped home workshop. He started with nothing but unused space and worked slowly as he could afford to, and the transformation is amazing. If he can adapt his basement for his family's use, so can you!
You'll be surprised at how much a finished basement will add to the value of your property. After all, it amounts to doubling the living space in your home, so instead of having a small 1,200 square foot area to work, play, and relax in, you'll end up with almost twice that. It's like buying a larger house without having to move. In addition, if you decide to sell your home, potential buyers will love the fact that the house is a lot bigger than it looks, and you'll be able to command top dollar for the property.
There are a lot of reasons why you would want to finish your basement, and finished basement ideas abound on the Internet. Take a look at that dreary old space under your house, and envision what it could look like if you added space for family activities and friends. In addition, you'll make your biggest investment, your home, worth just that much more.
