Self-confessed ‘crush-addict’ Isabelle O’Carroll had our audience in fits of laughter discussing her theory on crushes. “Some people say that their crushes are so strong it prevents them from eating or even sleeping! But crushes can be such a powerful motivator making you change your life or a strong comforter in times of depression.”Other highlights during our third quarter included Alex Lambert’s gripping topic on creativity, ideas and technology, Inua Ellams’ insightful talk on mental health issues in men and Sabah Choudrey’s moving story on being a transgendered Muslim.

he night ended with some amazing personal favourites of our team including Kate Faragher’s speech on intuitive collaboration and Roi Cohen’s almost sci-fi presentation on brain stimulation. Cloudia Vardon challenged our audience with her experience on coping with synaesthesia and Lata Govada educated us all on crystals beginning with her opening line “crystals, the fascination of mankind!”Ideas from Europe Competition

2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I spend pretty much every day in Brixton and still love just walking around and soaking up the atmosphere, mainly walking through Market Row, Granville Arcade and Electric Avenue.3. What’s your interpretation of this year’s theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? My interpretation is very much a visual one. Kaleidoscopes are beautiful ever-changing patterns that develop and grow without knowing what you are going to see next. I think that hugely describes Brixton. It is such a diverse place that is constantly changing. Every day I see new developments and the way things change but still fit together and work alongside each other.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? I’m reading a few! One is “Lean in” by Sheryl Sandberg which is a hugely motivational read that I would recommend to anyone. I’m also working my way through the new Gizzi Erskine “Healthy Eating” cookbook which is brilliant. I’ve just finished Lena Dunham’s “Not That Kind of Girl” which had me in stitches throughout and gave a whole new perspective on being a woman in her twenties!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? That opinion changes daily, I have the app so constantly have a look as to what kind of talk I’d like to listen to. One that really sticks out is from this year’s TED in Vancouver by David Eagleman which we screened at the Impact Hub in Brixton. It really opens your eyes to what science can do6. What’s your biggest highlight from last year’s TEDxBrixton event? I put forward Simon Parkes as someone to approach as a speaker for 2014 and seeing him on stage after weeks of developing his talk and being such a huge fan of his story and book was a very special moment, one I will remember for a very long time.

With a growing desire for more ethical fashion initiatives, fashion enterprise HustleBucks, co-founded by Samuel Ade Alebioshu, is picking up huge recognition for marrying social good with innovative clothing. “Our ‘hustle’ began in 2009 with a team of young people keen on making a difference through clothing by using it as medium to express ourselves and the issues we felt were relevant,” says Samuel.

HustleBucks has a unique focus in that not only does it cater for the socially conscious fashion lover

What inspired you to create The Chronicles of Brixton?

My favourite submission has to be the collage of Barbara Jordan, the American civil rights activist that makes up the centre of The Chronicles of Brixton. Visually it’s a really powerful image, and the things it’s introduced me to have been totally unexpected. For starters, I didn’t even know who Barbara Jordan was before so it’s opened me up to a whole new piece of history about an incredible woman who’s massively shaped the world we live in.
