Binki Taylor was the first of our 17 speakers to take to the stage and left the crowd in standing ovation with a moving story on her childhood as a black girl fostered by an all-white family. “I know exactly what it’s like to have a voice that isn’t understood. You feel like you don’t belong. Under the skin is where I found my voice. I had to tackle how to belong from the bottom.”Rebecca Trevalyan, Sam Hall and Steadman Scott also delivered their pieces on what Brixton means to them and thoughts on improving local communities. “What does Afewee mean? It’s for the community, it’s for us. Our mission is to put belief, passion, hard-work and discipline together,” Steadman explained.

An incredible amount of work goes into creating a TEDx experience and TEDxBrixton is no exception. With this years’ theme being so full of colour shape, it was down to our Executive Producer and Stage Designer to visualise and create a kaleidoscopic atmosphere that works seamlessly with the iconic TED brand. From the staging and venue design to the way finding and external branding, every detail was uniquely crafted by this talented team whose knowledge of events and design ensure TEDxBrixton 2015 leaves a lasting and impactful legacy.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? My role within the team is Project Coordinator. I help all the teams where necessary on a variety of tasks and have been working on sourcing the merchandise for the event.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I love going to Brixton Market at the weekend: having a browse and trying all the different food there, picking up fresh bread from the Sunday Farmer’s market and have particularly enjoyed Pop Brixton this summer, especially the savoury crepes from L’Amuse Bouche!3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? For me, kaleidoscope means something that is rapidly changing, something vibrant and colourful which is full of energy and continuously creating something beautiful that comes together perfectly.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? I am currently reading I Am Pilgrim, a fantastic thriller entwining the lives of a former intelligence officer and an international terrorist – I can’t put it down and would highly recommend!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? There are so many amazing TED talks that I have enjoyed, but one that stands out to me is Susan Cain’s The Power of Introverts because it really examined the social emphasis on being bold, assertive and outgoing and discusses how we should change our perspective and understand the value of introverts. In our society, I think there is bias thinking that the ideal students and employees are extroverts as opposed to introverts, and I think it is important to shed light on the positive differences between the two and strive for more of a cultural balance between the two.

When Virginia Gardiner came up with the idea of a waterless lavatory that turns waste into energy, she sought to create a product that ??rethinks a basic part of life’ -something she feels we take for granted but should improve. “Toilets are about much more than a product,” she says. “They are about systems, biology, culture, religion – now we have a great team who are all experts in various aspects of this really broad and interesting field.”
Virginia also speaks highly of Simon Parkes who graced our stages in 2014 with his talk ??How I bought the Brixton Academy for £1’ “I’m a big fan of Simon Parkes – his talk and also his book, Live at the Brixton Academy, which is a lot of fun and full of great lessons for entrepreneurs.”
