1. Tell us a bit about your background? I’m the partnerships manager, which means I look after our relationships with local businesses and sponsors.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I’ve lived her for a while now and this answer changes weekly, but at the moment I love hot yoga classes at Fierce Grace, after which I stagger down the road to Lucy’ Juices for a pick me up. As I expect most people who live here say, Brixton Market is a favourite spot – Fish Wings and Tings is an institution and Dave from Market Row wines will always find you a great bottle. Oh, and Three Eight Four on Coldharbour Lane does the best cocktails I can find.3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? I’ve been working with a lot of local businesses this year and the theme has been very meaningful for a lot of people, as it represents the mash-up of old and new that Brixton is currently experiencing.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? A few! Currently switching, depending on my mood, between Tim Jackson’s Prosperity without Growth (he has a great TED talk by the way) and Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, which is a favourite of my dad’s, so he’s chuffed I am finally reading it.5. What’s your favourite TED talk? An all time great and one that I always pass on to others is Jackson Katz – Violence Against Women: It’s a Men’s Issue. Heavy title I know, but just a genius argument and one that never fails to spark debate.

TEDXBRIXTON TEAMS: a spotlight with our set designers

An incredible amount of work goes into creating a TEDx experience and TEDxBrixton is no exception. With this years’ theme being so full of colour shape, it was down to our Executive Producer and Stage Designer to visualise and create a kaleidoscopic atmosphere that works seamlessly with the iconic TED brand. From the staging and venue design to the way finding and external branding, every detail was uniquely crafted by this talented team whose knowledge of events and design ensure TEDxBrixton 2015 leaves a lasting and impactful legacy.

We have a committed facilities team who are responsible for the management of services and processes that support all of TEDxBrixton’s departments. It’s a wide field with a diverse range of responsibilities which can only be fulfilled by a team who are reliable, highly organised, efficient and astute in the planning and daily operations of running an organisation. Meet Rima, Lauren and Piotr.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? My role within the team is Project Coordinator. I help all the teams where necessary on a variety of tasks and have been working on sourcing the merchandise for the event.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I love going to Brixton Market at the weekend: having a browse and trying all the different food there, picking up fresh bread from the Sunday Farmer’s market and have particularly enjoyed Pop Brixton this summer, especially the savoury crepes from L’Amuse Bouche!3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? For me, kaleidoscope means something that is rapidly changing, something vibrant and colourful which is full of energy and continuously creating something beautiful that comes together perfectly.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? I am currently reading I Am Pilgrim, a fantastic thriller entwining the lives of a former intelligence officer and an international terrorist – I can’t put it down and would highly recommend!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? There are so many amazing TED talks that I have enjoyed, but one that stands out to me is Susan Cain’s The Power of Introverts because it really examined the social emphasis on being bold, assertive and outgoing and discusses how we should change our perspective and understand the value of introverts. In our society, I think there is bias thinking that the ideal students and employees are extroverts as opposed to introverts, and I think it is important to shed light on the positive differences between the two and strive for more of a cultural balance between the two.

Multifaceted people with interchanging experiences. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? I am currently reading ‘US’ by David Nicholls. It’s a funny, sad and tender tale of man trying to save his marriage. It details a thoughts, emotions, highs, lows, failures and disappointments of the journey of marriage and family life and includes brilliant observations about life, art and culture. What’s your favourite TED talk? The multi-award winning youth led social enterprise was formed in Brixton Village under the direction of visual arts space 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, a platform known for supporting the careers of emerging artists and advocating cultural diversity. It was this opportunity that created access for HustleBucks to catapult real change in the community. “Designing t-shirts and printing them led to us launching campaign with a collection of relevant topics such as ‘Ghustlebucks 3un and Knife Crime’ and ‘Different Endz’, which were sold at local events and market stalls. Shortly after, we partnered with Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design to develop a collection for our first fashion show that would launch our Pop-Up Shop in March 2010.”

HustleBucks has a unique focus in that not only does it cater for the socially conscious fashion lover

The down-to-earth Brixton local and her multi-national team have an office based in Brixton and a team in Madagascar who are currently rolling out a ??waste-to-value’ urban sanitation pilot system with 100 household toilets in the city’s capital, Antananarivo.

And though the company is still in its infancy, Loowatt boasts huge potential to bring in more business in to the area creating even more diversity and variety to the synthesis of Brixton. “I’m pretty sure we’re the only waterless toilet company in Brixton. As we grow as a company, we’d like to continue bringing people and jobs into the area, and finding ways to collaborate and share ideas with other local businesses,” she concludes.

If you could choose one image to represent Brixton, what would it be?

That’s what inspired the style of the final piece; you have to really look up close at The Chronicles of Brixton to see what it’s made up of. The question ‘what one thing would you save from a fire?‘ is quite a personal one. The answer can say a lot about a person, and often tell you things about them that you wouldn’t be able to guess. It’s about showing that no matter how we look at a glance, there’s more under the surface. We’re all different, but ultimately the same in the sense that we’re all human with our own stories.
