Keepsakes and memories make a great statement anywhere, including your fireplace. The platform on top of the mantel is one of the best places to display anything. Family pictures make a good centerpiece, but other keepsakes, like bronzed baby shoes, diplomas, or souvenirs from trips or life events can be placed on top of the fireplace mantel.

The next step is considering the design of the accent piece. For large brick fireplaces chunky wooden mantels work very well, while for a small fireplace in a bedroom something more demure will be appropriate. You will also need to decide if you want scrollwork or other elements included in the overall design, or if clean and simple lines are a better choice.

The fact that fireplaces come in many different heights and widths often leads to one of the most common mistakes made when buying a fireplace surround - failure to measure the fireplace in advance. While some people possess the ability to take a good look at a mantel and know whether or not it is the right size, most of us do not possess that gift. You'd save yourself some time and frustration if you measure the fireplace, including the dimensions of the hearth. This will help you to focus on fire place mantels that are the right proportion for your fireplace.

Apart from its other benefits, a fireplace surround is also important for the safety it provides. The surround can provide additional layers of fire protection, making the fireplace less dangerous and more enjoyable.

Self-confessed ‘crush-addict’ Isabelle O’Carroll had our audience in fits of laughter discussing her theory on crushes. “Some people say that their crushes are so strong it prevents them from eating or even sleeping! But crushes can be such a powerful motivator making you change your life or a strong comforter in times of depression.”Other highlights during our third quarter included Alex Lambert’s gripping topic on creativity, ideas and technology, Inua Ellams’ insightful talk on mental health issues in men and Sabah Choudrey’s moving story on being a transgendered Muslim.

Binki Taylor was the first of our 17 speakers to take to the stage and left the crowd in standing ovation with a moving story on her childhood as a black girl fostered by an all-white family. “I know exactly what it’s like to have a voice that isn’t understood. You feel like you don’t belong. Under the skin is where I found my voice. I had to tackle how to belong from the bottom.”Rebecca Trevalyan, Sam Hall and Steadman Scott also delivered their pieces on what Brixton means to them and thoughts on improving local communities. “What does Afewee mean? It’s for the community, it’s for us. Our mission is to put belief, passion, hard-work and discipline together,” Steadman explained.

Eating a bowl of noodles at Mama Lan in Brixton Market.3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? It’s about changing perceptions and seeing things in a different way.4. 1. Tell us a bit about your background? I’m the partnerships manager, which means I look after our relationships with local businesses and sponsors.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I’ve lived her for a while now and this answer changes weekly, but at the moment I love hot yoga classes at Fierce Grace, after which I stagger down the road to Lucy’ Juices for a pick me up. As I expect most people who live here say, Brixton Market is a favourite spot – Fish Wings and Tings is an institution and Dave from Market Row wines will always find you a great bottle. Oh, and Three Eight Four on Coldharbour Lane does the best cocktails I can find.3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? I’ve been working with a lot of local businesses this year and the theme has been very meaningful for a lot of people, as it represents the mash-up of old and new that Brixton is currently experiencing.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? A few! Currently switching, depending on my mood, between Tim Jackson’s Prosperity without Growth (he has a great TED talk by the way) and Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, which is a favourite of my dad’s, so he’s chuffed I am finally reading it.5. What’s your favourite TED talk? An all time great and one that I always pass on to others is Jackson Katz – Violence Against Women: It’s a Men’s Issue. Heavy title I know, but just a genius argument and one that never fails to spark debate.

We have a committed facilities team who are responsible for the management of services and processes that support all of TEDxBrixton’s departments. It’s a wide field with a diverse range of responsibilities which can only be fulfilled by a team who are reliable, highly organised, efficient and astute in the planning and daily operations of running an organisation. Meet Rima, Lauren and Piotr.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? My role within the team is Project Coordinator. I help all the teams where necessary on a variety of tasks and have been working on sourcing the merchandise for the event.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I love going to Brixton Market at the weekend: having a browse and trying all the different food there, picking up fresh bread from the Sunday Farmer’s market and have particularly enjoyed Pop Brixton this summer, especially the savoury crepes from L’Amuse Bouche!3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? For me, kaleidoscope means something that is rapidly changing, something vibrant and colourful which is full of energy and continuously creating something beautiful that comes together perfectly.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? I am currently reading I Am Pilgrim, a fantastic thriller entwining the lives of a former intelligence officer and an international terrorist – I can’t put it down and would highly recommend!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? There are so many amazing TED talks that I have enjoyed, but one that stands out to me is Susan Cain’s The Power of Introverts because it really examined the social emphasis on being bold, assertive and outgoing and discusses how we should change our perspective and understand the value of introverts. In our society, I think there is bias thinking that the ideal students and employees are extroverts as opposed to introverts, and I think it is important to shed light on the positive differences between the two and strive for more of a cultural balance between the two.
