We wouldn’t be able to put on such an incredible event if it wasn’t for the help of our sponsorship team. These guys boast a unique ability for sourcing the most suitable supporters to raise the profile of TEDxBrixton. Due to their strong experience in fundraising, they create and manage the budget, raise money from sponsors and oversee our partnerships program and live streaming venues. Their work is vital to our success and development.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? I’m the partnerships manager, which means I look after our relationships with local businesses and sponsors.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I’ve lived her for a while now and this answer changes weekly, but at the moment I love hot yoga classes at Fierce Grace, after which I stagger down the road to Lucy’ Juices for a pick me up. As I expect most people who live here say, Brixton Market is a favourite spot – Fish Wings and Tings is an institution and Dave from Market Row wines will always find you a great bottle. Oh, and Three Eight Four on Coldharbour Lane does the best cocktails I can find.3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? I’ve been working with a lot of local businesses this year and the theme has been very meaningful for a lot of people, as it represents the mash-up of old and new that Brixton is currently experiencing.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? A few! Currently switching, depending on my mood, between Tim Jackson’s Prosperity without Growth (he has a great TED talk by the way) and Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, which is a favourite of my dad’s, so he’s chuffed I am finally reading it.5. What’s your favourite TED talk? An all time great and one that I always pass on to others is Jackson Katz – Violence Against Women: It’s a Men’s Issue. Heavy title I know, but just a genius argument and one that never fails to spark debate.

An incredible amount of work goes into creating a TEDx experience and TEDxBrixton is no exception. With this years’ theme being so full of colour shape, it was down to our Executive Producer and Stage Designer to visualise and create a kaleidoscopic atmosphere that works seamlessly with the iconic TED brand. From the staging and venue design to the way finding and external branding, every detail was uniquely crafted by this talented team whose knowledge of events and design ensure TEDxBrixton 2015 leaves a lasting and impactful legacy.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? I’ve been working on the mobile app for TEDxBrixton ensuring that it’s launched ahead of the event. I’m also the Ticket Coordinator ensuring that tickets are distributed and allocated. The main part of my job will be at the actual event.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? Eating! I love the Brixton Market and the wide range of food you can choose.3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? Something that is constantly changing but is still so colorful and amazing to look at. This is how I feel about Brixton and the people living in it.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? What’s it about? On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins – a book about how our brain works and if it’s possible to build a machine with artificial intelligence. Very interesting!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? How great leaders inspire action –it’s about why we do things and allows us to better understand our decisions. I absolutely love it.

1. Tell us a bit about your background? My role within the team is Project Coordinator. I help all the teams where necessary on a variety of tasks and have been working on sourcing the merchandise for the event.2. What’s your favourite thing to do in Brixton? I love going to Brixton Market at the weekend: having a browse and trying all the different food there, picking up fresh bread from the Sunday Farmer’s market and have particularly enjoyed Pop Brixton this summer, especially the savoury crepes from L’Amuse Bouche!3. What’s your interpretation of this years’ theme ‘Kaleidoscopes’? For me, kaleidoscope means something that is rapidly changing, something vibrant and colourful which is full of energy and continuously creating something beautiful that comes together perfectly.4. What book(s) are you currently reading? I am currently reading I Am Pilgrim, a fantastic thriller entwining the lives of a former intelligence officer and an international terrorist – I can’t put it down and would highly recommend!5. What’s your favourite TED talk? There are so many amazing TED talks that I have enjoyed, but one that stands out to me is Susan Cain’s The Power of Introverts because it really examined the social emphasis on being bold, assertive and outgoing and discusses how we should change our perspective and understand the value of introverts. In our society, I think there is bias thinking that the ideal students and employees are extroverts as opposed to introverts, and I think it is important to shed light on the positive differences between the two and strive for more of a cultural balance between the two.

The multi-award winning youth led social enterprise was formed in Brixton Village under the direction of visual arts space 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, a platform known for supporting the careers of emerging artists and advocating cultural diversity. It was this opportunity that created access for HustleBucks to catapult real change in the community. “Designing t-shirts and printing them led to us launching campaign with a collection of relevant topics such as ‘Ghustlebucks 3un and Knife Crime’ and ‘Different Endz’, which were sold at local events and market stalls. Shortly after, we partnered with Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design to develop a collection for our first fashion show that would launch our Pop-Up Shop in March 2010.”

Following the success of the Pop-Up Shop in March, the team were invited back on a permanent basis from October 2010 and currently offering the opportunity for aspiring fashion designers to retail their own products in the HustleBucks shop.

A huge TEDxBrixton supporter

Fast forward seven years later, Loowatt has evolved tremendously winning multiple awards and has graced the fields of several major festivals and national trade shows across the UK, as well as our very own TEDxBrixton stage where Virginia revealed how her waterless toilets turns human waste into energy. “When we built the first system in Madagascar, we made bio gas tea to share with the community. On the other side of the wall was a toilet which produced the energy to make the tea. So this is real.”

The Chronicles of Brixton is an amazing kaleidoscopic image made up of photos submitted by the general public of what they would save from a fire. The image looks almost like a mandala, and only on closer inspection are you able to recognise the photos of different items that people have sent in.

The Chronicles of Brixton has given me a real thirst to hear more stories and I’m fascinated to find out what, if anything, would be different if I were to carry out the same project in other places. And at other times too. Watch this space!
